The BASICS of RABBIT DENTISTRY

The first session of the course introduces basic but very important topics of dentistry of pet rabbits, such as anatomy of the head and teeth, physiology of mastication, and nutrition.

The clinical exam in the conscious patient and the procedures for diagnosis and treatment of dental disease under anesthesia will also be discussed.

This short lecture is focused on:

- an overview of dentition in selected exotic mammal species;

- the taxonomic groups of rodent species with different dentition;

- the clinical traits of the acquired and progressive dental disease in pet rabbits.

- the anatomy of the teeth, dental formula, numbering systems, terminology;

- the anatomy of the skull and the mandible;

- the anatomy of the masticatory muscles;

- the anatomy of the lacrimal glands and of the nasolacrimal duct;

- the anatomy of the nasal and paranasal cavities;

- the anatomy of the ear.

This short lecture is entirely focused on the physiology of mastication.

This extensive lecture is focused on the anestethic and analgesic procedures for diagnosis, treatment, and postoperative management of the patient with dental disease.

It includes:

- anesthetic protocols;

- face mask vs. orotracheal intubation;

- intubation techniques:

- local anesthesia and analgesia;

- post treatment analgesia.
